With our new Elders Evans (Australian) & Bradshaw (Texan), "love their accents!", we received permission to take them into Slovenia to the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle on our p-day.
The wonders of the cave system in Slovenia continue to amaze! God has made this world so beautiful and diverse.
Postojna Cave was carved out by the Pivka River over millions of years and is literally filled with stalagmites, stalactites, and formations called curtains or draperies that look like folded curtains.
The cave system is 15 miles long and is made up of four caves interconnected through the same underground river.
You enter the cave by climbing aboard a 1945, gas locomotive which takes you on a "Disneyland-like" ride deep into the cave. Of the 15 miles of cave system, about 3.3 miles are open to the public.
A little bit of history...During World War I, Russian prisoners of war were forced to construct a bridge across a large chasm inside the cave. Now repaired and reinforced, we cross that bridge on the tour.
During World War II, German occupying forces used the cave to store nearly 1,000 barrels of aircraft fuel, which were destroyed in April 1944 by Slovene Partisans. The fire burned for seven days, destroying a large section of the cave and blackening the entrance.
One of the large open caves within is equipped with real chandeliers, giving either an eerie feel or a grand ballroom look. Many concerts have been held inside which must be beautiful with the sounds echoing off the cave walls.
